Notes on ‘The Newsroom’

I’m part of the media elite, so I get write about HBO’s The Newsroom for Badass Digest: THE NEWSROOM: Panned But Still Popular

Gilmore Girls creator Amy Sherman-Palladino is one of the most unique voices working in scripted TV right now.  Sherman-Palladino’s sharp and cleverly crafted dialogue makes her work stand out on the tube, especially on ABC Family, which airs her new show,  Bunheads.

Her voice and personality also influence the great music and memorable quirky performances her shows are known for. With Bunheads, a drama about dancers, those elements often come together brilliantly in unique and stunning dance sequences, like the one above set to They Might Be Giants’ “Istanbul (Not Constantinople),” from Monday’s episode. Stream it, enjoy it, and don’t forget to watch Bunheads Mondays on ABC Family. (Check out my review of the series premiere.)

‘Avengers’ Find ‘Serenity’

I’m one of those nerds who loves, loves, LURVES the country-fried Firefly theme song. Slap that baby over a nicely edited reel of Avengers footage, like some wonderful person did here, and you’ve got me wishing for Joss Whedon’s Avengers TV show (with Natty Fillion as Hank Pym, of course.)

My True Blood adventures continue over at Badass Digest. Here’s a snippet from my latest episode review.

What a hot, bloody mess! Is it me or is True Blood feeling more erratic and lifeless than ever? I’m not ready to give up on the show just yet, but this follow-up to last week’s passable Season 5 premiere just didn’t grab me. Correction: The parts not featuring the newly vamped (and delightfully dandy) Rev. Steve Newlin didn’t grab me.

Bunheads, the promising new series from Gilmore Girls creator Amy Sherman-Palladino, will surprise and delight viewers seeking a warm, witty and deceptively deep summer TV obsession.

Gilmore Girls fans will find a lot to love here, including a bright but burdened heroine, clever dialogue and quirky characters dancing about (quite literally) in a cute small town setting. Bunheads boasts many of Gilmore Girls’ strengths, including the brilliant Kelly Bishop in a lead role, but this is no Gilmore retread. [Click to continue and comment]

As I mentioned earlier, I’m covering True Blood for Badass Digest this summer. (I don’t lie, boo.) Here’s a bit from my first episode review:

Welcome back to the hot, sticky, blood-soaked devil’s playground of Bon Temps, Louisiana, ya’ll. Can you taste the bacon grease?

It’s been a whole year since we last visited this swampy southern ghetto, where Sookie Stackhouse and her entourage of bloodsuckers, shapeshifters, werewolves and other supernatural beasties love to wreak havoc. And after the hot, tedious mess that was Season 4, I’m genuinely surprised that you decided to join us for another summer of True Blood. Surprised, but deeply delighted, of course.  So now that we’re all here, let’s talk about this wacky Season 5 premiere.

I’m Bringing Sexy (Robots) Back

by Mike Moody on June 8, 2012

GuySpeed asked me to write about my favorite sexy androids from movies and TV. Here’s part of the post:

Caprica Six, Battlestar Galactica: We’re willing to forgive this famous Cylon’s heinous acts against humanity simply because she’s so damn hot! Caprica Six, played by Tricia Helfer, used her sexuality to manipulate men (mostly Gaius Baltar) and help her robo-race get the upper hand on the Battlestar Galactica’s ragtag human crew many times. But she became a hero before the series ended, holding a big ass gun and blasting the baddies on the side of the good guys.

Celebrating the Ladies of ‘Buffy’

The titular hero of Joss Whedon’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer battled demons (both real and metaphorical) every day on the Hellmouth that was Sunnydale, California. Lucky for Buffy, she always had a little help from her friends. And lucky for us, most of her friends were played by some of the hottest actresses to ever grace the small screen. Read my list, Whatever Happened to the Hot Girls of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, at GuySpeed.

Now’s a good time to talk about Walter White, the forever-tainted meth-making genius of AMC’s Breaking Bad. AMC just released a brand new Season 5 poster featuring Walter sitting on his lawn chair throne ahead of the show’s return on Sunday, July 15. As always, Walter looks broken, disappointed and menacing (well, as menacing as a tired middle-aged man in a yellow jumpsuit can look anyway).

I’ll be reviewing HBO’s True Blood this season for Badass Digest. Excitement!

I appreciate the show’s fierce commitment to over-the-top blood-soaked Southern goth/fairy sex insanity, but I gotta be honest here: The real reason I campaigned to cover True Blood this season was to write about Christopher Meloni’s turn as a badass black-cloaked vampire who calls himself “The Authority” (Do ya feel the menace?).

OK, maybe Meloni’s not the only reason I want to write about True Blood this season. According to reports, this will be the final season spearheaded by show creator Alan Ball, which means the show could possibly start moving in a different direction as Season 5 progresses and the new showrunners start to influence things. I like change, and I love watching TV shows evolve over the years (for better or worse). It’ll be fun to follow the show this year to see what new tricks it has in store for us and how it plans keep us hooked for Season 6.

So join me @ Badass Digest every week after True Blood Season 5 premieres on June 10. It’ll be fun. And probably a little dirty.
