OK, I’ll be honest here; I never actually made it through the entire last season of Eureka. You’re surprised, I can tell. Let me explain … The season started out strong with a compelling and bold reboot arc, and it was cool to see Battlestar Galactica vet James Callis playing a time traveling scientist, but the show lost me shortly after the mid-season “zombie” episode. So I can’t say that I’m super thrilled about Eureka‘s return to Syfy, coming up on July 11, right before the Warehouse 13 premiere. I’ll probably tune in for a few weeks and tune out again after Colin Ferguson pretends to stare at some weird CGI effect with a startled expression and says, “What the hell?” or “You gotta be kiddin’ me!” for the twentieth time.
It’s not that Eureka is a bad show. I actually like the show, but it’s never really been able to hold my attention for more than a few episodes. Despite all the crazy stuff that happens on this series, it never really feels like there’s anything at stake, and the characters, while charming and fun to watch, are too one-note. It’s hard to become attached to them or really care about what happens to them. Still, it’s summer — the perfect season for nerdy fluff like Eureka. And maybe I’ll stick around for the entire season if the show manages to keep new cast member Felicia Day around all summer.
