Box Office Results - 'Godzilla: King of the Monsters', 'Rocketman' and 'Ma'
Well…I’m sad to report that Godzilla: King of the Monsters is actually sort of a dud despite landing in the #1 spot this weekend. Rocketman performed about as expected along with Ma, but boy, I sure was hoping for more out of the big lizard. Let’s break down the weekend.
Godzilla: King of the Monsters (WB)
Predicted: $65 million
Actual: $47.8 million
This is honestly a bit of a shock for me. I knew this film wouldn’t perform on the level of the previous movie, but I never thought that it would be to this degree. Apart from the mixed reviews, I thought the marketing for this film was absolutely stellar, along with that the audience scores for the film have been positive, yet here we are still with a $48 million opening for a $170+ million film. I also think this movie won’t hold up particularly well as there’s plenty of competition ahead. It’ll struggle, but it should still be able to inch past the $100 million mark domestically, which is NOT a win, but not a total embarrassment. It’s good that Warner Bros. have Godzilla Vs. Kong on tap to potentially salvage the brand next year, so we at least have that much time to tell if the Monster-verse can be saved.
Predicted: $27 million
Actual: $25.7 million
This is the prediction I’m most proud of. Most people out there were predicting a $30+ take for Rocketman, I low-balled it and almost gave in to the pressure and raised my prediction, but in the end I decided to keep it in the lower end. That said, this is still not a disappointing opening for the film, it cost Paramount around $40 million and the reviews are stellar so that means it should have legs moving forward. With positive reviews and a decent opening, I predict Rocketman to at least triple its weekend take and make off with around $75-80 million domestically.
Predicted: $20 million
Actual: $18 million
This was another win for me, but honestly, Ma was an easy one to predict. The film had a pretty strong marketing campaign and I knew it would counter-program effectively due to the lack of horror/thrillers in the market. Ma received mixed-positive reviews and people seem to like it well enough, so it’s $18 million opening should carry it to around $50 million by the time it leaves theaters.
