The Top 10 Summer Box-Office Predictions of 2019

The Top 10 Summer Box-Office Predictions of 2019

Just for the record, I WILL be including Avengers: Endgame, even though it’s releasing in late April, I feel like this is now the true kick-off time of the summer and it would just be weird to not include it. Now I hope you enjoy seeing me fumble through this summers predictions.

avengers endgame - 1.jpg

1. Avengers: End Game (Disney)
Opening: $302 million
Total: $725 million

I think this film is going to be capital B-I-G. There are few people in the North America that aren’t curious to see how this saga comes to a temporary close ad we reach the end of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s phase 3. I think Avengers has a good shot at being the first film to hit a $300 million opening and should hold on for the following weeks and become the second-highest grossing film domestically not counting inflation.

toy story 4 - 1.jpg

2. Toy Story 4
Opening: $192 million
Total: $615 million

The Incredibles 2 surprised everyone last year by grossing over $600 million domestically, and I think Toy Story 4 could do something similar. Toy Story 4 will be the animated film to beat this year and barring catastrophic reviews, should have strong legs throughout the rest of the summer.

the lion king.jpg

3. The Lion King (Disney)
Opening: $200 million
Total: $562 million

On name alone this film is going to do gang-busters and if it’s well-reviewed, even better. The Lion King is probably the most popular animated Disney property and I think just about everyone is going to want to see the CGI re-imagining, especially after director Jon Favreau already proved himself with his rendition of The Jungle Book.

the secret life of pets 2.jpg

4. The Secret Life of Pets 2 (Universal)
Opening: $110 million
Total: $380 million

The first Secret Life of Pets was a huge box office success and a crowd-pleaser for family audiences, it grossed over $360 million at the domestic box office. Universal and Illumination market the hell out of these films and awareness will be high. Illumination also has a stellar track-record for the staying power of their movies and the legs on this one should be strong. It’s also proven that these films are critic-proof, so bad reviews won’t be getting in the way of this one’s success.

spider-man far from home.jpg

5. Spider-Man: Far From Home (Sony)
Opening: $140 million
Total: $344 million

I think Spider-Man: Far From Home will be a much-needed Avengers: End Game pallette cleanser and the lighthearted MCU movie of the year, plus, Spider-man has always been a draw at the box office. I think this film will land in the ball-park of its predecessor and land firmly around them mid-300 million mark.

6. Pokemon Detective Pikachu (WB)
Opening: $95 million
Total: $245 million

7. Godzilla: King of the Monsters (WB)
Opening: $103 million
Total: $218 million

8. Hobbs & Shaw (Universal)
Opening: $67 million
Total: $155 million

9. Aladdin (Disney)
Opening: $52 million
Total: $142 million

10. Men In Black International
Opening: $48 million
Total: $133 million

Well that wraps up this year’s summer predictions! I feel pretty good about the order of my top 5, but the bottom five look like they could get a little dicey. Only time will tell. Check back in for the final results sometime in September of this year.
