Trailer - 'Bumblebee'

Trailer - 'Bumblebee'

With the cancellation of the next mainline Transformers film, and the beginning of a new Hasbro cinematic universe (*sigh*) on the horizon, we have the Bumblebee spin-off film trapped in the middle. Is this even connected to the original movies? Or is this a complete pallette-cleanse? Take a look at the first new trailer below:

Well, honestly, I can't tell if this is connected to the original or not. Hopefully not. What I will say, though, is that this looks like it might actually be...fine? There's one reason I'm truly pulling for this film to be good, and that is the director behind the project: Travis Knight. He's the lead animator at Laika, the studio that brought classics-in-the-making like Kubo and the Two Strings, Coraline and Paranorman to the screen. If this guy can't make a good Transformers film, I'm not sure anyone can.

As for the trailer, I'll be honest, it looks cheesy. That said, it looks cheesy in a charming sort of way. I got a bit of a Real Steel vibe from the trailer, and while that movie's not high art, it did have its heart in the right place. So hopefully we can enjoy a Transformers film without numerous explosions and bro-posturing for once.

Bumblebee comes out in theaters on December 21st, 2018.
