Trailer - 'The Grinch'
I'm known among my circle of friends that I absolutely detest Illumination Entertainment. I can't stand the minions, I can't stand the inanity of The Secret Life of Pets and above all; I CAN'T STAND SING! So when I heard that Illumination was tackling Dr. Seuss's The Grinch Who Stole Christmas you would think that I would vomit, but for some reason, I didn't. Instead of being an asshole, I decided to think about the potential the film had for a second. Benedict Cumberbatch as the Grinch? Yeah, that sounds about right. A bright, colorful and simplistic animation style that suits Dr. Seuss books? Sure. Then, Despicable Me without the minions? Okay, now you have my attention.
So, with clear eyes I watched the first trailer:
So this is a mixed bag for me. I can't stand how Illumination trailers just seem to be like the animated version of America's Funniest Videos. I was inundated by "funny" antics with no connection to each other whatsoever, but it's a trailer and I know the film will have an actual story so I sort of give it a pass. I like the animation, it's fine, but I'm afraid of those darn pop-culture references. Still, the film looks like it might be decent fun, and since there's an actual story for Illumination to base this off of, it might end up having more meaning than their other films...We'll see.
The Grinch hits theaters on November 9th, 2018.
