Box Office Results - 'The Grinch', 'Overlord', The Girl in the Spider's Web'
I’m patting myself on the back today because guess who predicted all three films’ box office numbers pretty much on-the-money. This guy! The Grinch easily took the cake this weekend, with the other genre films filing in far behind and disappointing. Let’s take a look at the results below.
The Grinch (Universal)
Prediction: $67.6 million
Actual: $67 million
The Grinch grossed an expected $67.6 million this weekend. For a budget of $75 million and likely huge legs ahead of it, this should be another knockout hit for Illumination. The reviews weren’t great, but these films are almost 100% critic-proof as evidenced by the immense success of the Dispicable Me films, Minions, Sing and The Secret Life of Pets. Look for The Grinch to file in around $200-250 million (maybe even higher) by the time it leaves cinemas.
Prediction: $9 million
Actual: $10.2 million
I was a little farther off on my prediction for this one, but still close enough to count as a win. Overlord, the $38 million Nazi zombie action movie grossed a disappointing $10.2 million this weekend. It could have been worse I guess, but this film is not going to make its money back, which is too bad because these types of original genre material don’t come around often. If Overlord is lucky it might be able to claw its way to $25-27 million.
The Girl in the Spider’s Web (Sony)
Prediction: $8 million
Actual: $8.8 million
The Girl in the Spider’s Web failed in similar fashion to Overlord, but it’s prospects seem even more bleak. Again, my prediction was pretty much dead-on, Spider’s Web grossed $8.8 million this weekend (I predicted $8 million). The difference between this and Overlord is tha the response to Spider’s Web was decidedly more sour, but critically and from audiences who saw it this weekend. Spider’s Web will probably pass $20 million, barely.
