Box Office Predictions - 'War for the Planet of the Apes', 'The Big Sick' and 'Wish Upon'
This weekend sees the release of the highly anticipated trilogy capper, War for the Planet of the Apes. We know this film is going to do well, but will it top the high-water mark of it's predecessor, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes? We also have the wide expansion of the highly acclaimed dramedy, The Big Sick, and the wide release of the horror film, Wish Upon. Let's take a look:
War for the Planet of the Apes (Fox)
Prediction: $65 million
If this film weren't opening the week after the massive opening of Spider-man: Homecoming, I might have predicted a higher opening for this movie. That said, I still think War for the Planet of the Apes is generating a ton of hype based off of the fact that its been garnering some stellar reviews and is the finale to a very well-received reboot series. I don't imagine that there are going to be that many people that don't have at least a lingering interest in seeing what befalls Caeser in his final film.
My prediction for War for the Planet of the Apes is $65 million, a little under the $73 million opening of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, but enough to still be a huge success provided it has the necessary legs to carry it through the rest of the summer. Since this film is getting excellent reviews, I think it will hold pretty well in the coming weeks and potentially make it to around $180 million by the time it leaves theaters.
The Big Sick (Lionsgate)
Prediction: $12 million
Seeing as how The Big Sick is already doing exceptional business in limited release AND has stellar reviews (97% on Rotten Tomatoes), I think this is going to have a pretty good expansion. I don't think the film will break out in a huge way, but it's going to do just fine, mainly because it scratches that dramedy itch that many people have likely developed due to the lack of any good ones in recent memory.
My prediction for The Big Sick is $12 million. From there I think the film will have exceptional legs and make its way to around $55 million by the times its out of theaters.
Wish Upon (Broad Green Pictures)
Prediction: 10 million
Apart from a pretty terrible trailer I saw for this film, I know virtually nothing about it. Wish Upon is the latest low-budget horror film to hit theaters and though it looks bad, I still think there might be an audience for it, especially since there hasn't been much in the way of horror in the past few months.
My prediction for Wish Upon is $10 million, and from there I think it will fade fast and only make it to around $25 million by the time it's out of theaters.
