Box Office Predictions - 'Wonder Woman' and 'Captain Underpants'
We've got two films hitting theaters this weekend and I would say it's pretty clear which one is going to come out on top. The highly anticipated Wonder Woman finally makes its way to the big screen, along with the kiddie friendly Dreamworks production, Captain Underpants.
Wonder Woman (WB)
Prediction: $105 million
Wonder Woman has been a bit of a question mark for the past couple of months. I think audiences have been equal parts skeptical and hopeful for Wonder Woman as the movie's trailers have looked fantastic but the DCEU's track record has been spotty at best. Now that reviews have come out and they're overwhelmingly positive it has fueled the fire for this film to the point where I think its going to be a resounding success.
I don't believe the film will be able to top the openings of Suicide Squad and Batman V. Superman, but I think it should be able to clear the century mark, which will be fantastic for a movie that is budgeted at around $150 million. My prediction is that it rides a hype wave to $105 million and then legs it to $260 million by the end of its run.
Captain Underpants (Fox)
Prediction: $30 million
Fox and DreamWorks have had a pretty steady run of modest hits lately starting with Home and ending with this year's Boss Baby. Now we come to Captain Underpants which is an adaptation of the best-selling novels of the same name. The movie arrives at a time where there aren't that many high-profile family movies, save for may be Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2, so there's a chance that this film breaks out. That said, I haven't seen much in the way of marketing for the film. I'm going to make a safe prediction of $30 million for Captain Underpants, if it hits that mark it might be able to leg it to $110 million if it's well-received.
