Box Office Results - 'Ghost in the Shell' and 'Boss Baby'

Well, two box office contenders entered the ring this weekend, and one came out victorious, the other is still in there, unconscious and bleeding profusely. Sadly, the big loser this weekend was Rupert Sanders' Ghost in the Shell. The winner? Boss Baby...*sigh*

Boss Baby (Fox)
Box Office: $50 million

Boss Baby brought it home this weekend, surprising with a very healthy weekend total of $50 million, which I don't think anybody at all was expecting. I knew the film had a shot at making some decent money, maybe $30 million, but $50 million? Get outta town!

This continues DreamWorks moderately successful streak of films, which began with Home. This should be able to make at least $130 million in the US and a good amount more overseas, which should justify the $125 million price tag.

Ghost in the Shell (Paramount)
Box Office: $19 million

This has not a good couple of years for Paramount. Ghost in the Shell brought in a paltry $19 million this weekend. Honestly, that's a tad baffling. I thought the absolute lowest point for this film would be $24 million. While this film is practically D.O.A. here in the states, it may be able to make up a lot of ground overseas, particularly in China and Japan. So we'll see. Ghost in the Shell comes with a $110 million price tag, which while a lot, isn't as much as it could have been, so there's still the faintest glimmers of hope that this might crawl its way back to profitability. In the long run; Ghost in the Shell will be lucky to make it to $55 million domestically.
