Box Office Predictions - 'Power Rangers', 'Life' and 'CHIPS'
Beauty and the Beast was an absolute monster (no pun intended) last weekend. The DIsney live-action remake grossed an astonishing $174 million in its opening weekend and there's no chance in hell that any of the newcomers this weekend will be able to top it in its second weekend. Still, there might be a little money on the table for Power Rangers, Life and CHiPs to grab. Let's take a look.
Power Rangers (Lionsgate)
Prediction: $33 million
It's honestly hard to gauge how much of a demand there is for a Power Rangers film. I know that the show was popular but I really never hear anybody talk about it fondly and have heard virtually no desire to see a film for it. That said, the marketing has been more-or-less on-point and has been successful at drumming up interest where there originally wasn't any.
I predict that Power Rangers makes around $33 million in its opening weekend, which isn't bad but maybe not quite good enough to spawn a lucrative franchise. Honestly I feel like this would have had a chance to go higher if it wasn't releasing on the heals of arguably four successful blockbusters in the form of Get Out, Logan, Kong: Skull Island and now Beauty and the Beast. If Power Rangers can claw its way to $100 million, it might have a reason to stick around for number two, but it's going to be tough. I, personally, think it will barely make it to $85 million, but that's just me. Hopefully the film is good and Lionsgate can have a new franchise on their hands, what with Hunger Games being done and the Divergent series totally dead in the water.
Prediction: $12 million
Life seems like a competent Alien rip-off and if it's good like the critics are saying so far, it might be able to generate some staying power, but I think it's too late for it to get a really good opening weekend. The trailers have desperately been giving away more and more which is never really a good sign, but I still think that some audiences will show up because of the premise and star-power. I think Life will make it to round $12 million, maybe higher if audiences like what they see and word-of-mouth does its thing. In the long run I see Life making it to around $35 million domestically.
Prediction: $9 million
I saw maybe one trailer for this and didn't really know that it was coming out until I checked the schedule for this weekend. In addition to this the movie doesn't look very good. Still, I think CHIPS will be able to make a small chunk of change just based on the fact that it's practically the only comedy in the market. My prediction for CHIPS is $9 million, and I think that might be reaching. If CHIPS makes $9 million this weekend I expect it to make a total around $25 million by the time it's out of theaters.
