Box Office Predictions - 'The Lego Batman Movie', 'John Wick: Chapter 2' and 'Fifty Shades Darker'
We have quite the smack-down this weekend and three big movies come into play, all of which appeal to vastly different audiences. First we have the family-friendly The Lego Batman Movie, then one for the action junkies with John Wick: Chapter 2 and finally one for the ladies and the date night crowd, Fifty Shades Darker.
The Lego Batman Movie (Warner Bros)
Prediction: $70 million
I think it's pretty obvious that this one is going to take the gold this weekend. An argument could be made for Fifty Shades Darker, but I think most audiences can smell the stench off of that one after being so horribly burned by the first installment.
The Lego Batman Movie is currently sporting a stellar 98% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and after the success of the first The Lego Movie, is in a perfect position to capitalize off of moviegoers seeking family-friendly fun and laughs. I predict that The Lego Batman Movie makes a stunning $70 million this weekend and legs its way to $220 million by the time it's out of theaters.
Fifty Shades Darker (Universal)
Prediction: $35 million
While I don't think many enjoyed the first film, it still brought in a gargantuan amount of money, so there's automatically going to be some carry-over to the next film. That said, I think this one is going to take a very steep drop from the first one's $85 million opening. Think Ted 2, which opened to $33 million, whereas the first one made an astonishing $54 million in it's first weekend. Fifty Shades Darker should be able to crawl its way past the $30 million mark, my guess is that it pulls in around $35 million for the weekend and probably drops like a rock for a domestic total of $80 million by the time it's done in theaters.
John Wick: Chapter 2 (Lionsgate)
Prediction: $27 million
I'm most curious to see how this one plays out. The first film was a massive surprise both critically and financially, and while it still didn't make a huge amount of money, the original has a loyal following that has only grown in the past two years. I think just about everybody who is a fan of action is at least a little bit curious to see what happens with John Wick in chapter 2.
I think John Wick: Chapter 2, just like the first film, is going to surprise people yet again with an opening that's higher than expected. With a score of 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, I think Chapter 2 will score a slam-dunk with a $27 million opening this weekend. If audiences like this movie as much as the critics seem to, look for it to hold up pretty well, though maybe not as well as the first. If John Wick: Chapter 2 makes it to $27 million, look for it to maybe have a shot at $75 million, which would be phenomenal for a series that no one ever expected would be good.
Be sure to check back in on Monday when the dust settles and the results of this showdown are revealed. See you all then!
