Box Office Predictions - 'The Great Wall' and 'A Cure For Wellness'
This week sees the release of three films that will probably not make enough to justify their cost. The first is the epic-looking The Great Wall starring Matt Damon, then there is Gore Verbinski's return to horror, A Cure For Wellness, and finally we have the Ice Cube comedy Fist Fight.
The Great Wall (Universal)
Prediction: $14 million
This film really doesn't have too much to worry about, mainly because its already made around $220 million in China against a budget of $150 million. Still, This film needs to at least do a decent amount domestically to guarantee it as a profitable endeavor. I think initially there was an interest in this film, but it seems to have tapered as they've shown more and more of it in the trailers. The trailers are not bad, and the effects are inventive, but nothing about these creatures they are fighting seems convincing or real. One scene even looks like a bad World War Z outtake as these masses of CG monsters pile on each other like ants up the side of the wall.
My prediction for The Great Wall is $14 million, mainly because I think the Matt Damon factor guarantees a certain amount of people will show up. Judging by the middling reviews, I don't think the film will hold up all that well and will probably end up with around $40 million by the time it's finished.
A Cure for Wellness (Fox)
Prediction: $8 million
I really want this film to be good and do well, but I judging by the reviews and low levels of buzz, I feel like I'm going to be disappointed on both fronts. Still, I'm not going to judge its quality until I've seen it myself. A Cure for Wellness sees Gore Verbinski dipping back into the well of horror and even if the film is a disappointment, it will at least be gorgeous to look at. I don't really understand why there's no excitement for this film, granted, the trailers look very similar to Shutter Island, but the film still looks unique and exciting enough to justify a trip to theater. Ah well, we'll see.
My prediction for A Cure for Wellness is $8 million. Being a horror film, it's also likely that it won't hold up well in the coming weeks, unless audiences see something in the movie that critics didn't. That said, look for A Cure for Wellness to finish it's run with around $16 million.
Fist Fight (WB)
Prediction: $14 million
This is probably the film that has the highest chance of being a success this week. It has been a while since we had a straight-up comedy and Ice Cube can be a considerable draw. That said, this just doesn't look all that good so I don't think we're going to get anywhere close to Ride Along or 21 Jump Street numbers. I think Fist Fight has a legitimate shot at around $14 million this weekend, maybe more. Also, look for the film to hold up reasonably well and make around $45 million by the time it's all finished up.
Check back in on Monday for this weekends results!
