Box Office Results - 'Split', 'xXx 3', 'The Founder', '20th Century Women' and 'The Resurrection of Gavin Stone'

Well it's about darn time! I finally had a successful weekend of predictions and guessed very close to every single one of the five movies that came out this past weekend. Split ran away with it this week, which I thought might happen, but somehow it even exceeded my high expectations, while xXx: The Return of Xander Cage landed around where I thought it would. The rest of the weekend's released flopped just like I predicted.

Split (Universal)
Prediction: $30 million
Actual: $40 million

What a surprise hit! M. Night Shyamalan really is back in full force because he's just opened a $10 million-budgeted film to $40 million, which already quadruples its cost. Split is also receiving pretty good reviews and audience reception so it's likely going to stick around for some time and if all goes well it could have a shot at crossing the century mark by the time it finishes up its run.

xXx: The Return of Xander Cage (Paramount)
Prediction: $18 million
Actual: $20 million

The third film in the xXx franchise which sees the return of Vin Diesel saw a middling opening of $20 million, which is just two million over what I predicted, and just enough for a pass! The opening isn't terrible, especially since the film is likely to perform well overseas and cost a reasonable $85 million to produce. While it might not make enough to justify another sequel, I think the film will be fine in the long run and might make it to around $55 million domestically.

The Founder (Weinstein Company)
Prediction: $2.5 million
Actual: $3.4 million

Another hit! I knew this film would be lost in the shuffle this weekend with all the other offerings already on the market for its select audience. I don't know what the budget was on The Founder but $3.4 million isn't likely the opening the Weinstein Company was hoping for. The film has pretty good reviews and is likely to keep a bit of an audience in the coming weeks and might be able to leg it to around $12 million, which is still pretty sad.

20th Century Women (A24)
Predicted: $2 million
Actual: $1.4 million

A24 has always had pretty small wide openings, so this is no surprise. 20th Century Woman opened to $1.4 million and will likely be playing the long game. I guessed $2 million, so that was just enough to be a pass. With an opening this small, it is likely that 20th Century Women only makes it to around $7 million by the time its finished.

The Resurrection of Gavin Stone (HTR)
Predicted: $1.5 million
Actual: $1.2 million

I can't believe it, four correct predictions in one weekend. That's not very likely to happen again any time soon. I knew The Resurrection of Gavin Stone wouldn't appeal to very many people, and it was in a very small amount of theaters for a wide release. The Resurrection of Gavin Stone took in $1.2 million for the weekend and probably won't make it much higher than $5 million by the time it's out of theaters.

The Top Ten

1. Split - $40 million (NEW) $40 million
2. xXx: The Return of Xander Cage - $20.1 million (NEW) $20.1 million

8. Patriot's Day - $5.7 million (-50.5%) $22.4 million
9. Sleepless - $3.5 million (-58.6%) $14.9 million
10. The Bye Bye Man - $3.4 million (-74.6%) $20 million

That wraps up this week's box office results! Check back in soon for my predictions for next weekend which sees the release of the final Resident Evil film; Resident Evil: The Final Chapter!
