Box Office Predictions - 'xXx: The Return of Xander Cage', 'Split', 'The Founder', 'The Resurrection of Gavin Stone' and '20th Century Woman'

Box Office Predictions - 'xXx: The Return of Xander Cage', 'Split', 'The Founder', 'The Resurrection of Gavin Stone' and '20th Century Woman'

This week sees the release of another whopping five films, and while only two of them are likely to bring in significant quantities of cash, it's still a massive number of options for moviegoers to choose from and there will likely be some box office cannibalization this weekend. Let's dive in.

xXx: The Return of Xander Cage (Paramount)
Prediction: $18 million

There was a rush of curiosity when the first trailer debuted for the third xXx film, and I think that's really all people needed. The movie looks exciting enough to at least garner a  bit of an audience, but I really don't think we're going to see breakout numbers like we saw for the fourth Fast & Furious film when they brought that crew back together.  My prediction for xXx: The Return of Xander Cage is $18 million for the weekend and a grand total of $55 million by the time it rolls out of theaters.

Split (Universal)
Prediction: $30 million

I think we're going to have a surprise upset with Split. The new M. Night Shyamalan flick is snowballing with a ton of buzz and mostly great reviews, plus it's got an intriguing premise that is enticing to moviegoers, plus, everyone's curious about what the twist will be this time. My prediction for Split is $30 million, it might be high, but we've seen breakouts like this before and I'm going to call it for this one. If Split does reach $30 million, I predict it holds up fairly well from week to week and makes it to $75 million by the end of its run.

The Founder (Weinstein Company)
Prediction: $2.5 million

Let's face the facts; there are just too damn many films out that appeal to the audience that would go see this movie, the well is almost completely dry and no matter how good this film is, people just don't have that much money left in their wallets. The movie is getting good reviews and I'm sure it's a fine piece of work, but I just don't see this getting much higher than $3 million this weekend. My prediction for The Founder is $2.5 million and maybe $10 million by the time it finishes its run.

20th Century Women (A24)
Prediction: $2 million

A24 has a pretty steady track record for releasing well-reviewed films that rake in a good amount of money over long periods of time. This film might follow a similar trajectory, which also means it's not going to have that large of an opening, which for a film like this, is fine. My prediction for 20th Century Women is $2 million for the weekend, and perhaps $10 million by the end of its run.

The Resurrection of Gavin Stone (High Top Releasing)
Prediction: $1.5 million

This film isn't even releasing in 1000 theaters, has virtually no buzz going for it and no reviews. That doesn't bode well, guys. I have no idea what this film is about and don't even want to spend a few extra second to figure it out, so I'm just going to guess $1.5 million and call it a night.

What an exhausting few weeks! Be sure to check back in after the weekend to see how all of these films performed.
