Trailer - 'Live By Night'
I don't know how I let it slip my mind that Ben Affleck was directing another film, let alone a gangster film set during the prohibition era. That's right down my alley, so basically this trailer for Live By Night just blind-sided me completely. Here it is:
This looks simply phenomenal and might have just shot up to the top of my most-anticipated list of films for the fall-winter stretch. From this trailer alone, you can tell that Ben Affleck has picked up even more directorial tricks. This film is absolutely gorgeous-looking from a cinematography standpoint. What I also like is that it seems to capture the effectively somber nature that I admired from Sam Mendes's Road to Perdition, along with the visceral brutality of the firefights present in Michael Mann's Public Enemies, then a touch of the music and visual bombast of...wait for it... Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby. I know these three movies aren't perfect, but they all exemplify a certain appealing aesthetic that I feel Affleck has drawn from effectively.
Live By Night also just seems perfectly-timed for Affleck. He's done a film that is very similar in nature to a gangster flick in the form of The Town and he started to turn back the clock and visit an event in a different time period with Argo. Live By Night is the most natural next step a director like Ben Affleck could take. I don't know about you, but I can't wait to see how this film turns out and I hope that Affleck goes four-for-four with his latest directorial effort.
