Trailer - 'Fences'
We just saw Denzel Washington in the crowd-pleasing western, The Magnificent Seven, and he's already back at it directing and starring in the new period drama, Fences. Now that we're getting back into the Fall season, we're going to start seeing a lot more films come down the pipe in search of awards. Fences looks to at least be making a bid for a couple of best actor awards judging by the powerhouse performances on display from Denzel Washington and Viola Davis. Watch the trailer below:
Denzel Washington is pretty much good in just about everything he's in; but I would say what he does here is better than anything he's done in a long time, and that's just from the trailer. That monologue he gives to his son is hard-hitting and perfectly-delivered. I'm inclined to attribute this fantastic performance to Washington also being in the director's chair for this one, which usually means the actor is more emotionally involved in the story he or she is trying to tell. Not to be underestimated; Viola Davis comes in towards the end with an emotional, retaliatory attack of words, and it's just as powerful. I look forward to catching this film this December.
For those not familiar with Fences (Me), it's based on an award-winning play of the same name written by August Wilson. Here's a brief summary of the play:
Troy Maxson, is a strong man, a hard man. He has had to be to survive. Troy Maxson has gone through life in an America where to be proud and black is to face pressures that could crush a man, body and soul. But the 1950s are yielding to the new spirit of liberation in the 1960s, a spirit that is changing the world Troy Maxson has learned to deal with the only way he can, a spirit that is making him a stranger, angry and afraid, in a world he never knew and to a wife and son he understands less and less.
Fences releases in theaters on December 25, 2016.
