Budget for 'Jurassic World' Sequel Rumored to be $260 Million
I don't think anybody expected Jurassic World to be as big as it was. I mean, I think we all knew it would be big, but this beast took down The Avengers! Jurassic World brought in a monstrous $652 million domestically and a stunning 1.67 billion worldwide so it's no surprise that Universal is throwing copious amounts of money at the sequel. Scified reports that the magic number for the J.A. Bayona-directed sequel will be $260 million. That's a lot of dough, but it's still not the most a studio has spent on a film before. Somehow, the bland Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides cost an immense and entirely baffling $378 million.
Based off of the budget, it looks like we might be seeing far more spectacle in the upcoming sequel. I'm excited if just a bit skeptical. J.A. Bayona has a great eye for visuals and has never had an enormous budget behind his films until now, so I'm at the very least curious to see what he conjures up. I enjoyed the first Jurassic World film as a popcorn flick, but it lacked the heart and the sense of wonder that the original Jurassic Park exhibited. My hope is that J.A. Bayona recaptures a bit of that magic and avoids CG overload, but with that budget hike, I don't see that as a likely outcome.
Jurassic World 2 stomps its way into theaters June 22, 2018.
