Box Office Predictions - 'The Light Between Oceans' and 'Morgan'
This weekend we have two different films releasing that I know very little about. First up is The Light Between Oceans, the drama stars Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander and Rachel Weisz. The film's directed by Derek Cianfrance, who brought us Blue Valentine and The Place Beyond The Pines, the latter of which is a movie I really admire that plays with some very interesting thematic ideas. The other film to receive a wide release this weekend is Morgan. The film is a sci-fi thriller directed by Luke Scott that stars Kate Mara and Michelle Yeoh and interestingly is produced by Ridley Scott.
The Light Between Oceans
Prediction: $5 million
This film's opening in 1500 theaters and is an R-rated drama with not much promotional material. I expect some to show up based on the actor's and the director's pedigrees, but I really don't see this pulling in much more than $5 million. In addition to this, the film's reviews aren't swinging in its favor (it's currently sitting at 42% on Rotten Tomatoes), which should dissuade the type of crowd that movies like this usually draw in.
Prediction: $8 million
I've only seen one trailer for this film and it honestly didn't really grab me. Nothing looked particularly wrong with it, I just felt like it didn't have an interesting visual identity and all of it's ideas seemed borrowed from Lucy and Ex Machina. Now I haven't seen the film so I could be completely off-base. That being said, I think my reason is also the reason why not many will show up for this film. It's playing in 2000 theaters and I think that will carry it to around $8 million for the weekend. I wouldn't be surprised if this came in even lower though.
I fully expect Don't Breathe to take the top spot again, as neither of these two new releases look to be standing out or gathering any significant buzz. Check back in this coming Monday for the results!
