Box Office Predictions - 'Suicide Squad' and 'Nine Lives'
My predictions are completely random and mostly based off of my gut-feeling. I try to avoid other box office sites before I make my predictions as it takes away from the fun. That being said, my predictions may be very off-base when all the numbers are tabulated (just covering my ass here). Basically this only exists for my own guessing pleasure. The only tools I use to assist my predictions are theater counts and audience reception to trailers and other promotional material.
Unfortunately this week I accidentally stumbled upon some of the projections for this Suicide Squad's opening weekend. It's almost impossible to avoid with big films like this, box office news is all over the place. That being said, I will try to form my own opinion of how I think this film's opening will play out. Believe it or not, another film is also opening alongside 'Suicide Squad' in hopes of a little counter-programming. The film's called 'Nine Lives' and stars Kevin Spacey in a role that sees him transformed into a cat. Talk about a nail-biter for #1 this weekend.
Prediction: $125 million
Reviews have been posted for this film and unfortunately they're mixed-to-negative. That being said, I don't see this film playing out the same way 'Batman V. Superman' did. I have a feeling the general movie-goer will have a little more fun with this one and the reviews won't quite cripple it in the way that they did BvS. If the reviews are to impact anything, it will be the opening weekend. I just get a feeling that word-of-mouth among casual movie-goers will be slightly more positive this time around and the movie gets to a better multiplier overall. If this film was getting good reviews, I think it could have nearly matched BvS's opening. However, I feel the negative reviews will scare some people away from seeing it on the first weekend, but not for it's entire run. I'm going to guess 'Suicide Squad' still musters it's way to a stellar $125 million.
Prediction: $7 million
There's still a ton of family movies in the market right now, and if kids didn't bite the bait with that latest Ice Age film, I doubt they will for 'Nine Lives'. That's not to say that it's worse than 'Ice Age', but when was the last time families actually showed up for a movie like this other than, I guess, Paddington? I'm going to predict that 'Nine Lives' will rake in a very modest $7 million.
Check back in this coming Monday to see how 'Suicide Squad' and 'Nine Lives' performed, and to see if I was anywhere close this week.
