Trailer - 'Rings'
Why is this film happening? Oh yeah, money. For the record, I really liked the first Ring, but it's definitely a product of its time that hasn't aged well and really only gets a pass today because of the damage it did to me when I was young and vulnerable. Then came the worst CG deer ever that ended up being more scary than anything else in the sequel simply titled Ring 2. Well, since people loved that movie so much we're getting another one titled: Rings. I wonder if there will be multiple rings? Let's watch the trailer!
I'm already bored by the plot of this film as it's been done to death. From the looks of things, Samara is trying to be reincarnated in a young woman's body and in her pursuit, no television screen is beyond her reach, not even on an airplane! There's also some obvious CG and a disturbing lack of anything resembling something scary or even creepy.
As if the concept for this film was bad enough already; this film looks to take away the two things that still kind-of worked about the Ring films. The first aspect that's noticeably absent is Gore Verbinski's visual flourishes; say what you will about the director, but he's great at getting good-looking shots and perspectives. Secondly, no more Naomi Watts, who added some heart to the films that would have otherwise been completely droll and lifeless.
Look, I'll still give it a shot, maybe it's not as bad as this trailer suggests, I'm just not seeing anything inspired or interesting about this film. I'll gladly eat crow if I'm wrong, I just get a strong feeling that this will just come off being another Unborn, remember that one? Thought not. Rings will stumble its way through screens October 28th, 2016.
