News - Shazam Film to be Part of DC Extended Universe

I honestly totally forgot 'Shazam' even existed until this interview reminded me. Shazam is a DC hero that I've never really known too much about other than the fact that he's a boy that yells "Shazam!" and magically becomes a caped, muscle-bound, adult superhero. Here's some excerpts from an interview Newsweek conducted with producer Dany Garcia.

Firstly he clarified that they would be "living in the same world" and that they "will have incredible autonomy over this brand and franchise. We are working with a different team, different producers, directors... it's a different set-up."

He also dropped a few inspirational words that referenced the previous DCEU outings in a classy way: "don't feel fettered by, or constrained by, the successes or failures and challenges of the other projects. That was a key component to our participation---that we be able to control the tone and the voice, and do it the way we want to."

Finally he gave information on the status of the project, as well as saying just about everything you might want to hear to reassure you that it's going to be a good film:

"We’re getting [script] drafts in… it’s important to make sure we get the tone right for Black Adam, which is Dwayne’s part. We don’t mind taking our time. We’re being very careful with each act and scene to go back and layer in as much as possible. We’ve got so many wonderful superhero franchises out there… we don’t need to run away from them and say ‘we can’t be that,’ but it’s important to understand what are the best aspects of a Batman [movie] versus Avengers versus Deadpool? What are the elements people are responding to? We want to move the needle."

As nice as this all sounds, I just don't know how this film can exist without being a straight-up comedy, but hey, what would be wrong with that, comedic superheros have been doing well so far. Well, I'll tell you what's wrong with it, the DCEU is so far a pretty dark and serious place, despite 'Suicide Squad's efforts to lighten it up a bit. I just think it's going to be really weird to see the murderous Batman, the murderous Superman, the murderous Suicide Squad...and the presumably murderous Wonder Woman come together with a prepubescent boy that yells "SHAZAM!" and starts murdering people as the Rock. We'll see, I'm definitely not ruling this one out, I actually want to see it succeed, I just hope it's funny, cool and brings levity to the DC Extended Universe in a natural way.
