Box Office Predictions: The Secret Life of Pets
Just in case there are any newcomers; my predictions are completely random and mostly based off of my gut-feeling. I try to avoid other predictions before I make mine because it takes away from the fun. That being said, my predictions may be very off-base when all the numbers are tabulated (just covering my ass here). Basically this only exists for my own guessing pleasure. The only things I use to assist my predictions are theater counts and audience reception to trailers and other promotional material.
The New-comers (Wide):
The Secret Life of Pets (Universal):
Prediction: 75 million
I think this is one of Universal’s shoe-ins this year and if not for ‘Finding Dory’ holding so well, I may have even guessed higher. There’s a chance that the little fish that could might take a bite out of this ‘Pets’ opening weekend. Still, the studio behind this film has seen massive success with ‘Despicable Me 1&2’ and somehow cracked the billion mark with ‘Minions’ just last year. In other words, they are not to be underestimated.
I also feel like the trailers have been very well received. Every time I’m in the theater I hear bursts of laughter all throughout. At the lowest I see this hitting $50 million and at the highest somewhere around $80…So I’ll settle in around $75 million. I’ve learned it’s not wise to bet against cute cg animals, So I won’t.
Mike & Dave Need Wedding Dates (20th Century Fox)
Prediction: 12 million
I’m going to be honest here. I’ve never even heard of this movie until now. Its got Zak Efron, Anna Kendrick, Aubrey Plaza and Adam DeVine in it though so it may do alright based off star-power alone. I really have no interest in going any further with this one…I’ll slap it with a $12 million and hope it sticks.
Anyway, that sums up this week’s predictions, I’ll see you guys once the dust has settled on Monday.
