Box Office Results - Star Trek Beyond, Lights Out and Ice Age: Collision Course
I was a little closer this weekend. I'd actually say I had moderate hits for all three flicks over the three day weekend. None of them were on the money, but they were all pretty close.
'Star Trek Beyond' ended up earning $59 million. My guess was $68 million; so there was a less-than-$10 million difference there. I will chock that up to a mild victory. I ended up guessing a little too high; I thought the high anticipation levels and solid reviews would carry this one a little farther. Eh, oh well, it was still able to do pretty decent numbers and it will hopefully hold up well in the long run.
My prediction for 'Lights Out' was $18 million. I was almost right on the money here. The low-budget horror flick manged to break-out and gross an impressive $21 million. Its budget was only $4 million so it's safe to say that this film is already in the black.
'Ice Age: Collision Course' somehow dropped even lower than my already scaled-back expectations. I pegged it at $28 million; it only managed $21 million. I'm going to actually back-pedal on this one and say I missed the mark here. I see this as a positive thing though; this franchise has long out-stayed its welcome and it's time for it to remain in the past like...well...the ice age. Couldn't help myself. This film will still bank overseas and possibly have a good multiplier here in the states, but I don't see Fox green-lighting a sixth film any time soon.
Elsewhere on the charts; 'Secret Life of Pets' continued to hold strong at number 2 with a $29 million third weekend. The animated flick from Illumination Entertainment has raked in an impressive $260 million here in the states and still has plenty of ground to cover. I see it ending up around $330 million; excellent for an original property.
'Ghostbusters' didn't have a phenomenal hold, but it didn't completely collapse either as it dropped 54% bringing in an additional $21 million for a fifth-place finish. 'Ghostbusters' is currently at a safe but unremarkable $86 million. 'Finding Dory' is still swimming while 'Tarzan' is still swinging with $7.2 million and $6.6 million respectively.
That concludes this week's box office results. Catch me this Wednesday when I predict the outcomes of: 'Jason Bourne', 'Nerve' and 'Bad Moms'.
