Box Office Results - Ghostbusters

Ugh...Well I was wrong again. I thought this film might blow up and become something a little bigger. That's not to say that it under-performed, it was just simply...adequate. 'Ghostbusters' busted into theaters with an alright $46 million. This is a good start if it performs like other successful comedies which usually garner high multipliers. However, I feel like this is more of a fan-driven type of move that relies more on hype rather than word-of-mouth, so I don't feel like it will end up with a ridiculous amount of money by the time it shuts down. Let's say somewhere around $135 million. That's pretty good, but probably not what Sony was hoping for before they released that first trailer.

Unfortunately, 'Ghostbusters' was unable to dethrone 'Secret Life of Pets' which grossed an additional $50 million. This is further proof of the strength of animated family movies this year, following the success of 'The Angry Birds Movie' and 'Finding Dory. 'Legend of Tarzan' held strong in third place, bringing in $11 million. I honestly never thought the movie would get past $90 million domestic, yet here it is at $103 million and counting. 'Finding Dory' also brought in $11 million and is quickly approaching the $450 million mark. 'Mike and Dave' dropped over 50% to $7.5 million, it'll be fine when all is said and done though.

'The Purge: Election Year' dropped 50% raking in another $6.5 million, it'll easily pass $80 million domestic at this point. Comedy hit 'Central Intelligence' dropped a modest 33% and banked another $5 million. Bryan Cranston starrer, 'The Infiltrator', unfortunately only brought in $5 million. It probably won't make it much farther that $15 million once all is said and done.

Catch me next time when I predict the opening weekends for 'Star Trek Beyond', 'Lights Out' and 'Ice Age: Collision Course'
