Trailer - A Monster Calls

Trailer - A Monster Calls

Apparently this is the third trailer for this film and somehow I had never heard of it until now, which is weird because I'm a total fantasy film junkie. Watch the trailer and scroll down if you want to read my impressions.

Yes, yes that tree-thing definitely looks like the love child of Groot and Treebeard. Like...it's almost too close, but hey, it still looks cool. Liam Neeson's also back doing what he does best; voicing a wise, charismatic CG creature. From the look of the trailer I'm guessing they didn't have too huge of a budget for this one. You can certainly tell it's all CG, but it's all done in a very aesthetically pleasing way.

The movie seems like it's going to have some thematically heavy subject matter, just with a bit of a genre twist. Which I like. Director J. A. Bayona has had some success in the past, especially with 'The Impossible' which depicted the most realistic disaster sequence I've yet seen put to film. Based on this I have faith that the film will at least have some wow moments and well-executed dramatic beats.

I wasn't completely floored by this trailer, but it is certainly intriguing and quite beautiful to look at. Needless to say, I'll definitely be giving this one a watch come October 21st when it is released in theaters.
