Box Office Predictions - Ghostbusters
my predictions are completely random and mostly based off of my gut-feeling. I try to avoid other predictions before I make mine because it takes away from the fun. That being said, my predictions may be very off-base when all the numbers are tabulated (just covering my ass here). Basically this only exists for my own guessing pleasure. The only things I use to assist my predictions are theater counts and audience reception to trailers and other promotional material.
This weekend finally sees the release of the rebooted all-female 'Ghostbusters'. The trailer was met with much vitriol, which I found kind of baffling. I mean, it wasn't a great trailer, but I sure as hell didn't find it insulting. Paul Feig also has a pretty great track record when it comes to comedic films. I just hope it FEELS like Ghostbusters and isn't just a good comedy. If they can nail the tone and not just make 'Bridesmaids' with ghosts, I'll be cool with it.
Along with all the negativity comes a muted box office projection from most. Not from me! I'm going to be the black sheep here and say this movie is going to do just fine. Maybe not gangbusters, but enough to be successful. It's not going to have 'Jurassic World'-type numbers, but I see even the haters showing up for this just out of pure curiosity or to confirm their thoughts.
My prediction is that this counter-programs all of the guy-centric films and gets a lot of women in the theater. It will also pick up a few nostalgic viewers and will be a good family choice. I think it'll even get men in the seats based off brand alone and the fact that it has action and horror beats to boast. This should honestly play in all the four quadrants, even with all the negative reception to the trailers. Call me crazy, but I'm predicting a $60 million weekend for 'Ghostbusters'.
Tune back in on Monday for the rundown of the weekends results.
