Box Office Predictions: 'Underworld: Blood Wars', 'Hidden Figures' and 'A Monster Calls'
I'm sorry for ducking out on these box office predictions and results during the Holiday season but so much came up and there were so many movies that I just didn't have the time to keep track of it all. Again, sorry! But I'm back now, and for the first week of January we have three wide releases hitting theaters and the big question is: Will any of them be able to top Rogue One? Underworld: Blood Lines, Hidden Figures and A Monster Calls are here to duke it out.
Underworld: Blood Wars (Sony)
Prediction: $16 million
The fifth film in the moderately successful Underworld franchise is already raking it in overseas, but with that early release comes some early sour reviews. The movie is currently sitting at a lowly 10% on Rotten Tomatoes, which is even lower than all of the previous films in the series. Mind you, no Underworld film has ever had a fresh rating and they've all been able to sustain themselves at the box office, so this might not matter all that much.
My main concern with Underworld is that it might not be able to hold its own against the onslaught of Holiday releases. There are so many options out there already that I feel Underworld might get lost in the shuffle. That said, horror/genre films tend to have pretty great openings in the first week of January, a trend I've never quite understood. I think it's safe to say that Underworld: Blood Wars pulls in a weekend total in the mid-teens, say $16 million.
Hidden Figures (Fox)
Prediction: $15 million
Hidden Figures has done quite well so far, having only released in 25 theaters and bringing in $2.6 million. Despite that, I don't see this one blasting off in a big way in its first weekend. The movie has stellar reviews so I think it will be quite leggy, I just don't see a mass of people showing up to check it out, especially since there are so many other dramas in the theater already dividing this film's target audience. I'm predicting Hidden Figures makes it to $15 million this weekend but holds on tight in the following weeks for a total that is at least around the $65 million mark.
A Monster Calls (Focus)
Prediction: $9 million
I've seen a lot of promotion for this film over the last few months and its always looked interesting to me. Still, releasing at a time when theaters are packed to the brim with aspiring dramas, it's hard to stand out from the crowd. The movie is at a solid 89% on Rotten Tomatoes, so critics like it, which will help it in the long run if moviegoers end up feeling the same way. I feel like this film will take a similar path to Hidden Figures and open modestly but have minuscule drops from week to week. My prediction for A Monster Calls is $9 million.
