Box Office Results: 'Office Christmas Party' and 'Miss Sloane'
I was close on both of my predictions this week, but not close enough for them to be hits. Office Christmas Party performed a bit better than I predicted while Miss Sloane was even lower than my already very conservative prediction.
Office Christmas Party (Paramount)
Prediction: $14 million
Actual: $17 million
This is harder than it looks and very frustrating when a prediction is this close. I had a reasonable amount of certainty that my prediction of $14 million would be pretty much on the nose this weekend, but enough people showed up to the holiday-themed comedy to push it a significant way past that mark. Office Christmas Party grossed a healthy $17 million this weekend.
Office Christmas Party cost a hefty $45 million, but it's in very good shape to perform well as it's positioned two weeks before the lucrative Post-Christmas week where every day of the week performs like a Saturday. My guess would be that this film makes it to at least $60 million domestically.
Miss Sloane (EuropaCorp)
Prediction: $4.5 million
Actual: $1.8 million
I knew this film wasn't going to make a big splash this weekend, but it barely even made a ripple. The drama/thriller starring Jessica Chastain grossed a very weak $1.8 million and likely won't stick around to make much more. The movie received decent marks with critics but not even remotely close to glowing. Miss Sloane might be able to make it past $5 million by the time it's all wrapped up.
Incarnate was the only holdover from last weekend, and if you don't consider its very poor opening weekend, its drop of 57.5% for a horror movie might not seem so bad. That said, its opening was, in fact, terrible and it only grossed an addition $1 million this weekend for a total of just $4 million. Fortunately the film only cost around $5 million to make so it won't be making too much of a dent in anybody's wallets.
The Top 10:
1. Moana - $18.5 million (-34.4%)
2. Office Christmas Party - $16.9 million (NEW)
3. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them - $10 million (-42.5%)
4. Arrival - $5.6 million (-23%)
5. Doctor Strange - $4.5 million (-32%)
6. Allied - $4 million (-44%)
7. Nocturnal Animals - $3.2 million (+352%)
8. Manchester by the Sea - $3.1 million (+38%)
9. Trolls - $3 million - (-36%)
10. Hacksaw Ridge - $2.3 million (-32%)
That does it for this past weekend's box office results. Make sure to check back in on Wednesday because I'm going to be predicting the box office numbers for the much-anticipated Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
