Box Office Predictions - 'Doctor Strange', 'Hacksaw Ridge' and 'Trolls'
This is going to be a big weekend, there's no doubt about that. First we have Marvel's latest attempt at turning a C-list hero into an A-list hero with Scott Derrickson's Doctor Strange. Next we have a career comeback from Mel Gibson in the form of the war epic, Hacksaw Ridge. Finally we have the Trolls movie from Dreamworks. Where do I think all the pieces will fall this weekend?
Doctor Strange (Disney)
Prediction: $80 million
After a huge marketing campaign and tons of fan anticipation, Marvel's Doctor Strange finally arrives in theaters. I'm going big on this one as I feel like just about every Marvel film is an event for movie goers. I know there have been ones that didn't quite pop like Marvel's other films, such as Ant-Man and The Incredible Hulk, but even Ant-Man went on to be a huge success. There's a certain risk for filmmakers to release movies in early November when there's not much foot-traffic in the theaters, but I doubt that that will affect a movie like Doctor Strange in the least.
Part of me wants to predict a little lower for this one just because of what ended up happening with Ant-Man, but another part of me thinks that Ant-Man didn't have that great of an opening because it followed after a string of blockbusters and, honestly, didn't have trailers that were nearly as compelling as Doctor Strange's. The mind-bending trailers along with the presence of Benedict Cumberbatch pretty much guarantee a satisfactory opening. I'm guessing that this film makes around $80 million in it's first weekend.
Hacksaw Ridge (Lionsgate)
Prediction: $12 million
I think on any other weekend, Mel Gibson's Hacksaw Ridge might have had a chance to shine brighter, but up against a box office juggernaut like Doctor Strange? Not a chance. It's sad, because this might just be the better film and the one that really deserves to be watched. Still, I think this film will survive the weekend, albeit with some scrapes and bruises, and will probably have some huge legs based off of word-of-mouth. My prediction for Hacksaw Ridge is $12 million.
Prediction: $32 million
This is another film that I think would have benefited more had it been pushed it back one week. That said, this one's still going to do pretty well. Apart from the fact that I think this film looks atrocious, it still has a certain appeal to it for little kids, and they're going to want to see that more than anything else that's playing this weekend. Still, they're going to lose some business from Doctor Strange, because let's face it, most of Marvel's films are pretty accessible to most families. My prediction for Trolls is a healthy if unremarkable $32 million.
That wraps up this week of predictions! Make sure to check back in on Monday to see how it all turned out! Until then, look for my reviews of both Doctor Strange and Hacksaw Ridge this weekend.
