Box Office Predictions - 'Fantastic Beasts', 'The Edge of Seventeen' and 'Beed for This'
This week sees the release of the highly anticipated Harry Potter prequel, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. It' hard to say how well the film will do compared to the massively popular Harry Potter films, but I think it will be just fine. Also coming out this weekend is the warmly-received comedy, Edge of Seventeen along with the Miles Teller sports drama Bleed For This.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (WB)
Prediction: $82 million
With Doctor Strange having released just two weeks ago and now Fantastic Beasts making its debut this weekend, magic seems very much "in". That said, how well will this film hold up to previous Harry Potter films and did Doctor Strange take a chunk out of the film's box office potential?
I think it's safe to say that this film won't perform quite as well as the Deathly Hallows films in the Harry Potter franchise, but I do see it coming in somewhere around Half-Blood Prince and Order of the Phoenix in terms of box office openings. I think there's a desire to return to the world of witchcraft and wizardry, even if all of the characters are different. Director David Yates is returning, so we know it is at least in good hands and the reviews on Rotten Tomatoes (89%) reflect that. I don't think Doctor Strange will make much of a dent in Fantastic Beasts at all; both films are must-sees and I don't think moviegoers mind shelling the extra cash out for each one. My prediction for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is $82 million for the weekend.
The Edge of Seventeen (STX)
Prediction: $7 million
Kelly Fremon Craig's comedy starring Hailee Steinfeld and Woody Harrelson titled The Edge of Seventeen is getting buzzy reviews but is only hitting a modest 1800 theaters this weekend. I think anyone that's not in the mood for magic, though, might see this as a good alternative. I don't expect it to have a huge opening, but it should be able to muster around $7 million, which will be a great start for the film which only cost STX $9 million to produce.
Bleed For This (Open Road Films)
Prediction: $6 million
The third release hitting theaters this weekend is the sports drama starring Miles Teller. I've seen a couple of previews for this one so there's a bit of publicity, but I just don't see too many people showing up for this one when there are so many other options out there. The silver lining here is that the film is pulling decent reviews so far, registering a 72% fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes. My prediction for Bleed For This is $6 million for the weekend.
That's it for this weeks predictions. Check back in on Monday for the results and to see if I came anywhere close on my predictions.
