Trailer - 'Ghost in the Shell'

Trailer - 'Ghost in the Shell'

The first trailer for Rupert Sanders' Ghost in the Shell has dropped. There's been a fair amount of controversy surrounding the casting of Scarlett Johansson as a character who is widely known to be of Asian descent. That said, does this film still look like it will be any good?

Controversy aside, I think this trailer hits all of the right beats thematically. I'm not as familiar with the Ghost in the Shell anime, but if it's anything like Blade Runner, I think they did a pretty descent job bringing the cyberpunk world to life. There's a smorgasbord of cool looking visual flourishes on display and some pretty neat Matrix-y choreography as well. I'm still hesitant to jump on board for this film though, mainly because director Rupert Sanders' last film being the middling Snow White and the Huntsman. For now, I think I'll err on the optimistic side; even though I really wish they had just gone ahead and cast an Asian lead.

Ghost in the Shell arrives in theaters on March 31, 2017.
