Trailer - 'Beauty and the Beast'
Disney has been on a bit of a roll with their live action adaptations as of late. The first sign that they were turning things around was with Kenneth Branagh's Cinderella, then Jon Favreau dazzled audiences with The Jungle Book, and even though it didn't make as big of a splash, David Lowery's Pete's Dragon was good as well. This brings us to the big one; Beauty and the Beast. This might be Disney's most challenging project yet when it comes to these live-action remakes. The full trailer just dropped so you can see for yourself if they're heading in the right direction.
For the most part I think this looks pretty great. The opening piano music for the trailer really brought me back into the world in a very effective way as I absolutely love the soundtrack to the original film and it looks like they've stuck very close to that here. My only issues arise from how some of the CGI looks. I think the beast looks great at times and then not-so-great at others, hopefully they're still working on that aspect of the film. Lumiere and Cogsworth, however, are updated in a really cool way and look phenomenal.
While I'm still not completely on board with Emma Watson playing Belle, this trailer sold me a bit more on her and so long as she gives the performance her all, she'll be a fine fit for the character. We also get a better look at Gaston played by Luke Evans, which I feel is very inspired casting, so I'm very excited to see how his character pans out. Overall, this looks like another successful adaptation, and though some of the CGI elements of the film raise some concerns, I'm reasonably certain this is going to turn out to be one of the better Disney revamps.
Beauty and the Beast hits theaters March 17, 2017.
