Trailer - 'Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales'

I don't know if there's anyone out there that was asking for this; but a new Pirates of the Caribbean film is on the way and we already have a teaser for it to give us an idea of what we can expect from the fifth entry in the franchise.

This is not a bad little teaser. I've had a complicated relationship with the Pirates franchise. I loved the first film and I firmly believe that it will go down as a classic. The second film is a fun romp that starts to show signs of being over-stuffed, then the third film is absolutely beautiful to look at, but very convoluted and hard to follow. The fourth, well, that film was just a slog from beginning to end, though I enjoyed Ian McShane as dreaded Blackbeard.

I like that they didn't lead with Jack Sparrow's typical slapstick antics in this teaser. The teaser is all about new characters, specifically Javier Bardem's ghostly villain. Bardem, thankfully, looks like he's doing more than simply cashing a check here and I can't wait to see what he brings to the table. The CGI still needs a bit of work, but I like how the ghost's hair moves as if it's submerged in water. That said, I'm definitely still very guarded about this film. The directors, Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg, don't have too much experience, though they did work on Netflix's Marco Polo

I sincerely hope this film is good and finally rights the ship for this slowly sinking franchise. I really like the Pirates world and want to see it thrive. At this point all I want is it to be better than On Stranger Tides

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales arrives in theaters on May 26, 2017.
