Van Helsing Will be Part of Universal Monster Universe
Universal bringing all of their monsters into a shared universe is one of the more exciting connected-universe developments of late. It also just makes sense, as these characters made appearances in each other's films way back in the 40's. The only thing that worries me is that they are going to take the action/adventure route with the film rather than make a straight-up horror. Maybe I'm wrong.
Anyway, in an interview with Cinemablend, the director of the critically-lauded Arrival confirmed that Van Helsing will be in the line-up:
“It is [part of the shared universe] right now. This is early in the process, and it’s evolutionary. I don’t know if that’s going to stay that way. But right now there is an absolute… there’s some cartilage that links it to other pieces, like The Mummy.”
Sounds like the existence of this project hinges on how successful the movies that come before it are. I sure hope these films turn out to be good and people actually go out to see them. It's a pretty big risk making a bunch of big-budget horror films that people have been known to not show up for in the past (The Wolfman). Universal seems to know what they're doing though, as they've been hiring real talent behind and in front of the cameras which should go a long way when it comes to getting butts in the seats.
