Box Office Predictions - 'Jack Reacher 2', 'Ouija 2', 'Keeping Up with the Joneses' and 'Boo! A Madea Halloween'
We've got a wide selection of films coming out this weekend. It's one of those rare weekends where four new releases vie for the box office crown. First up we have Tom Cruise vehicle and sequel Jack Reacher: Never Go Back which is marketed directly at action-movie fans. Next we have Ouija 2: Origin of Evil for the horror crowd and for the comedy audience we have Keeping Up with the Joneses and Boo! A Madea Halloween. Who will come out on top?
Jack Reacher: Never Go Back (Paramount)
Prediction: $18 million
I feel like there's just as much excitement surrounding this release as there was for the first one, maybe just a tad more. The first film brought in around $15 million in its opening weekend but legged it out to $80 million which is a pretty incredible hold for an action movie. I feel like this one won't hold as well but will have a slightly better opening, due to the mostly positive reception of the first film. I'm thinking Jack Reacher: Never Go Back makes it to just under $20 million, but I also wouldn't be surprised if it went a bit higher.
Ouija 2: Origin of Evil (Universal)
Prediction: $14 million
This will probably go down as one of best horror sequels ever, this new one's supposedly very good. This is partially due to just how poorly the first film was received by critics. I love seeing a good revival and can't wait to check this one out in theaters this weekend, that said, will the stench of the first film hold this one back?
Ouija 2: Origin of Evil won't have the same high opening weekend the first film did, but I believe people will spread that word-of-mouth and it will end up with a much better overall multiplier. My prediction is that Ouija 2 makes it to the mid-teens this weekend and legs it all the way to Halloween.
Keeping Up with the Joneses (Fox)
Prediction: $12 million
Keeping Up with the Joneses is an action comedy directed by Greg Mottola and starts Isla Fisher, Zach Galifianakis, Gal Gadot and Jon Hamm. I've seen so many trailers for this film and I might have chuckled a couple of times the first time I saw it, but it had since rubbed me the wrong way. The film is also very forgettable-looking, so I'm not thinking too many people will show up for this one. Still, I think it will perform a lot better than Masterminds did and I do think people might be starting to crave a comedy. I'm going to predict that this film makes it to $12 million, but I honestly don't know where this one's going to go.
Boo! A Madea Halloween (Lionsgate)
Prediction: $12 million
Even if his films don't always perform that well, there is always an audience for Tyler Perry's Madea films, and this won't be an exception. That said, interest does seem to be ever-so-slowly dwindling for the character, however, that shouldn't stop it from making somewhere in the low-teen millions for the weekend. I'm thinking Boo! A Madea Halloween pulls in around $12 million for the weekend.
Well that does it for this week's predictions, be sure to check back in on Monday to see the box office results and if I came out victorious in my guestimates.
