Monsters Unleashed Pits Hero Against Monster
Amid the disaster that is Civil War II, there are at least a few stories to be excited about in the Marvel Universe. One in particular that caught my eye is Monsters Unleashed. Courtesy of Entertainment Weekly, Monsters Unleashed is a five issue mini-series written by Cullen Bunn with a range of artists including Steve McNiven and Adam Kubert.
Poised to be a "Spider-Verse" of sorts for monsters in the Marvel Universe, Marvel's editor-in-chief states that "if there were ever a monster that stood ten stories high or taller and created mayhem in the Marvel Universe over the last several decades, they're gonna be in the story."
I am stoked. Yeah, it's yet another crossover event which means this story may span numerous titles, but at least it's something different and celebrates Marvel's lesser-known Godzilla-sized monsters and if the teaser image is any indication, we'll be seeing Fin Fang Foom, Devil Dinosaur, Groot, and hopefully American Kaiju at some point.
While not including the horror characters from Marvel such as Werewolf By Night, Dracula, or even Man-Thing is a missed opportunity, as those were always known as Marvel's Monsters, this will be unique nonetheless and may usher in an era of Marvel I'd be invested in again and maybe those characters will show later down the line.
On a sidenote, IDW currently has the license to Godzila, but it would be neat to see the big G return to Marvel for a cameo.
